KS4 College Courses

The Centre works hard to ensure all pupils have the appropriate knowledge and understanding required to make informed judgements regarding post 16 destination.  Pupils currently participate in lessons created to address the world of work and independent living.  We also work collaboratively with Ansbury Guidance to ensure all our Yr 10’s & Yr 11’s have direct 1:1 support in order to identify a career path or further training.

We have also developed strong partnerships with local education and training providers as listed below to enable pupils to experience college life through KS4 taster courses.  This has enabled pupils to make informed choices about their future.

For further information or to discuss available opportunities, please speak to a member of staff within your child’s Year Team who will then liaise with Ms Cheryl Conley who is the Centres Pupil Programme Officer.

Vocational Programmes for School

Paragon (Boscombe) is a site specific Motor Vehicle and Maintenance training provider.  Christchurch Learning Centre and The Forum Learning Centre have commissioned a small number of places specifically designed for our KS4 pupils.  Paragon have created an introductory course which gives pupils the experience, knowledge and understanding of motor vehicle maintenance which works towards Level 1 & 2 accreditation.  Those pupils able to successfully complete the course put themselves in a strong position when applying for post 16 courses.

KS4 Courses

KS4 at The College is open to all schools and education providers in Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset and surrounding areas.

Students in years 10 and 11 are welcome to join us to supplement their GCSEs at school. We follow a set Tuesday/Friday timetable to fit in with school days, as set by the local councils. We offer a wide choice of qualifications that align to the Department of Education performance tables, so these can supplement your GCSE point claims.
We can also take students in year 9, but unfortunately they will not receive recognised qualifications until they reach Key Stage 4.

Class sizes

We have the capacity to accept as many students as you would like, either in mixed groups with students from other providers, or in bespoke groups tailored to your requirements.  Class size is a maximum of 14, but tends to be around 10.
Most sessions are delivered in college, however, if required, we can also run sessions within schools.

Applying

Schools will need to provide an application form, Education Providers form and parental consent form to apply for places with us. Places are invoiced to schools on a termly basis.

Review

Weekly reports are emailed to schools on each student’s attendance, attitude and work completed. We also carry out termly progress reviews with students and copies are sent to the school.

Trial Period

Bournemouth & Poole College dance performance

We offer a six week trial period for the students to ensure that they are on the right course and that The College is the right place for them. They will then have a ‘Right Choice’ meeting with a member of our KS4 staff, at which point a student can be withdrawn at no further cost or they can choose to change courses.

The KS4 Manager will also arrange a visit into schools at least twice a year to review student progress and the support available, what subjects we can offer and any other topics that the school would like to discuss.

Support

In each class we have a subject specific tutor and a Learning Support Assistant to ensure students are fully supported at all times. However, all college staff go through KS4 training to ensure they provide the right support to students who are in compulsory age education.

If you would like to introduce KS4 courses at The College to your students and their parents, the KS4 team are happy to attend options evenings to discuss courses and options further.
